Textbook on Contemporary Biomaterials Published

A comprehensive discussion of biomaterials and their processing and applications has been published by Springer. The book titled Biomedical Materials provides an understanding of the fundamental concepts necessary to pursue research and industrial work in the growing area of biomedical science, including characteristics of biomaterials, biological processes, biocompatibility and applications of materials in implants and medical instruments.

It includes in-depth descriptions of the fundamental properties of metal, ceramics and polymers; biomaterial processing, characterisation and applications; wear; inflammation; carcinogenicity and hypersensitivity; protein interactions at material surfaces; sterility and infection; and a range of biomaterial applications.

Edited by R. Nayan of the University of Carolina (Chapel Hill, USA), the book is written by leading researchers in the field. Two of the contributors are members of European Medical Device Technology’s Editorial Advisory Board.

Professor C. James Kirkpatrick of the Institute of Pathology, Johannes Gutenberg University (Mainz, Germany), has written a section on Biocompatibility Testing with co-authors Kirsten Peters and Ronald E. Unger. Subjects addressed in this section include sample preparation, mammalian cell culture, cytotoxicity testing, haemocompatibility, hypersensitivity/allergic responses and alternatives to animal experimentation.

David Hill of Rock Medical plc (Washington, Tyne-and Wear, UK) has written the section on Manufacturing Issues, which discusses patents; liability; quality, standards, specifications; audits; and FMEA.

This book takes the reader to the forefront of biomedical materials development, says it publisher, and provides a taste of how the field is changing, while also serving as a useful reference to physicians and engineers.
