BVMed Establishes Soft Tissue Repair Implants Group
November 5, 2008 – 4:11 amTogether with numerous implants manufacturers, the German Medical Technology Association BVMed has established the Soft Tissue Repair Implants group. It was created to represent the interests of suppliers of implants used in the reinforcement of soft tissue such as hernias or ligaments. According to BVMed’s Manfred Beeres, the special interest group’s aim is to discuss the common interests and needs for this type of product across companies and to coordinate resulting activities. Reimbursement and quality are among the issues under discussion.
“There is a need for action in both in-patient and outpatient sectors,” Beeres says. “The department deals, in particular, with abdominal surgery, gynecology, and urology, as well as with plastic surgery.”
Established in September, the group includes Aesculap, C.R. Bard, Covidien, FEG Textiltechnik, GfE Medizintechnik, pfm Produkte für die Medizin, Serag-Wiessner, Tutogen Medical, and W.L. Gore as members. There is little business and economic data about this sector, and targeted market research is another aim of the group, according to Beeres.

Hernias are often the result of weak connective tissue. With modern hernia meshes, they can be safely and permanently repaired.
