Saarland Forms New Healthcare Cluster

July 22, 2010 – 5:40 am

Germany has a new medical cluster in the state of Saarland. Cooperation between industry and researchers combined with the short driving distances in Germany’s smallest state are expected to advance medical device technology. “Medical device technology in Saarland is a growing sector,” says Dr Christoph Hartmann, Minister for Economic Affairs and Science, Saarland. “We want to fully take advantage of that potential. In future, economy, hospitals and research institutes will work together even closer to develop innovative products. Medical device companies and healthcare institutes in this region enjoy a very good reputation – with our new Healthcare Cluster we want to further advertise our expertise and continue to boost research and science.”

Approximately 45,000 people are currently employed in the medtech and healthcare sector in the federal state of Saarland. Companies and institutes are cross-linked and get together for events on a regular basis. The events are being organised by the Zentrale für Produktivität und Technologie Saar ZPT (Centre for Productivity and Technology), IHK Saarland (Chamber of Commerce and Industry), Universitätskliniken (university hospitals), the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering IBMT and other partners.
