World First: Wipro Technologies Achieves IEEE 11073 Certification for Five Device Classes

July 22, 2010 – 1:48 pm

The x73 Manager USB Reference System developed by Wipro Technologies has received IEEE 11073 certification from industry organisation Continua Health Alliance. Wipro is the first healthcare IT services company to achieve this certification for five device classes: blood pressure monitors, pulse oximeters, weighing scales, thermometers and glucometers. The IEEE 11073–based software reference system will enable and simplify the needs of clinical diagnostic applications to collect vital medical data from homecare devices and bedside monitors through application programming interfaces.

“It is a moment of immense pride for Wipro because, apart from the certification, the toolkit has also been chosen to be part of the Continua reference design, underlining the quality and reliability of the solution,” said Manimaran Rajakannu, General Manager, Medical Devices Business, Wipro Technologies. “Our solution is both transport as well as platform agnostic. It goes beyond USB and includes Bluetooth over HDP, and is capable of running on Embedded Linux, Android, Blackberry and other mobile platforms in addition to Windows. This will act as a catalyst in our endeavour to provide faster solutions to our customers in the patient monitoring segment,” added Rajakannu.

Continua Health Alliance is a collaborative industry organisation dedicated to defining technology standards specifically for healthcare solutions. The alliance establishes technical design guidelines to provide manufacturers with the information they need to develop products such as interoperable sensors, telehealth platforms and health and wellness services. Products made under Continua Health Alliance guidelines will provide consumers with increased assurance of interoperability between devices, enabling them to share information with care givers and service providers more easily.
