The Helsinki Times reports that the Finnish capital is home to a variety of medical research, which is being carried out at a the new Finnish Institute for Molecular Medicine (FIMM).  Still under construction, the main lab will fill about 2600 square metres of space when it is completed in 2010.

“The aim of FIMM is to merge strategic resources and research in the field of molecular medicine, genetics and epidemiology in Finland, and to develop into a high-profile international research institute,” says Dr. Olli Kallioniemi, director of the institute. “The mission of the institute is to advance new fundamental understanding of the molecular, cellular and etiological basis of human diseases,” he says. “This understanding will hopefully lead to improved diagnostics and the treatment and prevention of common health problems.”
