Just days after the debut of the iPad 2, the intriguingly named Room4 announced that its multiplatform virtual slide application was demonstrated on the upgraded tablet. The demo happened during a lecture at a CATAI/UNESCO meeting regarding the use of iPhone and 4G mobile phones in telemedicine.
The application enables pathologists to remotely review and navigate diagnostic-quality images using either cellular or WI-FI networks via the iPhone and iPad. Rapid specialist referrals can be made without access to a computer, a microscope or the original specimen. The image can be reviewed by the pathologist and used to provide a diagnosis for cancer and other disease treatments.
The system, which has been developed in collaboration with the Institute for Medical Informatics (IMI; Oslo), was first released in 2009 for the iPhone. It now supports all versions of the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
