Gerresheimer Expansion Lays Foundation for Increased Market Share of Medical Plastic Systems

Gerresheimer Czech plant under constructionGerresheimer is growing . . . again. To satisfy demand from customers in the medical device, drug and diagnostics industries, the full-service contract manufacturer is practically doubling floor space, from 5400 to 10,400 sq m, at its plant in Horsovsky Tyn, Czech Republic. As demand for devices used in the treatment of chronic illnesses such as diabetes and asthma increases, Gerresheimer sees an opportunity to expand its market share of medical plastic systems, says Uwe Röhrhoff, CEO of Gerresheimer AG. “Our Czech plant will play a crucial role in this process, because it’s one of our most modern facilities for the production of medical plastic systems,” he notes.

Gerresheimer is widely known for its traditional portfolio of glass primary packaging products, but it has kept pace with industry and consumer trends, successfully making the transition to plastic in many areas. Indeed, the company has been manufacturing plastic pharmaceutical packaging products and application systems for several years, and the Plastic Systems Div. is one of the company’s fastest growing divisions. It produces insulin pens, inhalers, lancing devices and laboratory disposables and provides a full array of contract services from initial design sketches, tool making and production to packaging and just-in-time delivery.

The expansion of the Czech plant is expected to be completed before the end of 2011.

More news about Gerresheimer: EMDT Associate Editor Yvonne Klöpping reported recently on the company’s foundation of the Medical Innovation Group, which was discussed by Gerresheimer Regensburg CEO Andreas Schütte at this year’s Interpack.
