UK MHRA Appoints New Medical Director of Devices

The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has appointed Dr Michael Rhodes as its new Medical Director of Devices. He is replacing Dr Susanne Ludgate, who is retiring after 15 years as Medical Director of Devices and 21 years at MHRA. Rhodes will join MHRA on 8 November 2012. The Medical Director of Devices reports to Director of Devices John Wilkinson, according to MHRA’s organisation chart. Wilkinson, formerly Chief Executive of Eucomed, joined MHRA in February 2012.

Rhodes has been a consultant surgeon since 1995 and specialises in weight loss, hernia, gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery. He served as President of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland from 2009-2011. He has also served on the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence’s Interventional Procedures Advisory. Rhodes completed medical school in Oxford and Cambridge and finished surgical training in Newcastle, Bristol and Cardiff.
