Medtech Week Recap: MedTech Forum 2012 Emphasises Value-Added Innovation

October 15, 2012 – 12:33 am

The impact of the gloomy economic climate on the medtech industry was a central theme at the MedTech Forum 2012, which took place last week in Brussels. Speakers emphasised the importance of value-based innovation and the need for the industry to work closer with stakeholders to develop such products.

The discussion continued on Twitter, where @MedicalDevicesLegal (Erik Vollebregt) noted “Not a nice picture for #medicaldevices investment at #mtf2012 : go to the US for money, go the EU for first market access”. “If medtech industry does not wake up, the next generation of blood glucose monitors will be created by Apple #MTF2012,” tweeted @ClinicaMedTech.

The Nobel Prize winners were announced, and the Guardian’s Science Weekly podcast featured a discussion of the science behind this year’s prizes.

Crowdfunding site Kickstarter will open up to UK-based projects. Starting last week, people in the UK could start building their projects on the site.
