Medtech Week Recap: Investigation Highlights Shortcomings of EU Regulatory System for Medical Products

An undercover investigation by the British Medical Journal and The Telegraph exposed loopholes in the regulatory system for medical devices. The investigation detailed how Notified Bodies were willing to offer provisional approval or licensing for a hip implant product modelled after a MoM device banned in United Kingdom. MHRA released a statement in response to the investigation. In the statement, MHRA says that the proposal for the new medical device regulations addresses many issues that need to be improved.

The European Coordination Committee of the Radiological, Electromedical and Healthcare IT Industry has published a position paper on the European Commission’s proposal for EU regulations on data protection. The paper details the organisation’s position on how the proposal will impact the healthcare sector.

An ultrasonic technique developed by researchers in North Carolina could simplify the process of sorting out live cells for research purposes.
