Medtech Week Recap: MEPs Criticise Malta’s Nomination for EU Health Commissioner

New details are emerging in the scandal surrounding former EU health commissioner John Dalli and the nomination for his successor, Tonio Borg. Liberal members of the European Parliament have expressed strong criticism over Borg’s conservative social views, with Swedish MEP Cecilia Wikstrom leading the outcry by calling Borg “a dinosaur.” Meanwhile, people are calling for OLAF to release the report into the handling of the fraud investigation that resulted in Dalli’s resignation.

A study involving researchers at the University of Southampton shows that people who undergo total hip replacement are at higher risks of stroke during the two weeks after the surgery.

Researchers at University of Michigan are developing a method to harvest energy from the heart to power pacemakers. The technology could also power other implantable medical devices.
