Medtech Week Recap: Tonio Borg Is Appointed EU Health Commissioner; Reaches out to Critics

The European Parliament grilled Tonio Borg for several hours last week before he was approved as the new European Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner. In an interview with Malta Today, Borg reached out to the MEPs who voted against him and said he wants to meet and work together.

The US medical device tax that will take effect in 2013 has been widely criticised for the impact it could have on the US medtech industry. In the Medical Devices Group on LinkedIn, members discuss how the tax will impact the European industry.

Medical device recalls in the United States surged in Q3 2012, according to a recent report by ExpertRECALL. Increased scrutiny at US FDA and a more complex supply chain are two factors contributing to this growth, says Brian Buntz, Editor-at-large at UBM Canon’s medical group, in a blog post for Medtech Pulse.
