Customising Your Converting and Packaging Machines

Doyen Medipharm, a supplier of converting and packaging machines has set up a dedicated converting process development area at its manufacturing site in Wymondham, UK, aimed at helping transdermal and wound care manufacturers determine the best converting process for their products. Development of a custom process before product launch can increase speed to market and improve long-term product profitability, says the company. In addition, re-evaluating the existing manufacturing process of a marketed product when considering a dedicated system for scaling up to high volume production can improve efficiency.
Although accommodating a range of services, the new development area conducts material trials and proof-of-principle testing, which form an important part of the company’s development of customised machine solutions. Doyen’s custom test rig can be used to evaluate folding, laminating and die-cutting capabilities of delicate, stretchy, adhesive or nonadhesive materials. Subjecting a material sample to heat and stretch tests can provide the engineers with a good indication of how the material is going to perform and if particular handling and tension control techniques will be required to ensure efficient processing.
“Our experience helps customers to optimise product features and material handling for a more efficient manufacturing process,” explains Alastair Fleming, the company’s VP Manufacturing Operations. “Four side seal packaging material trials in cooperation with film, foil and paper suppliers have always been good practice for Doyen and our process development support is a natural extension of this popular and proven service.”
Doyen has sites in the UK, USA and Malaysia and supplies manufacturers of transdermal patches and wound dressings with high performance custom converting and packaging solutions. Its US-based sister company J-Pac LLC offers contract tray design, forming and sealing, and thermoform and pouch packaging.
